Filippiada sits at the foot of low hills on the right bank of the Louros River. It is 10 km northwest of Arta, 30 km northeast of Preveza and 52 km south of Ioannina. Since 2011 it has been the seat of the municipality of Ziros, in the Preveza regional unit.
History
The area has been inhabited since at least the 8th–7th century BC, and the ancient cities of Charadros and Bouchetion lay here. The Ottoman authorities founded New Filippiada in 1880–81 as an exclusively Muslim settlement. Greek forces entered the town in October 1912 and it was ceded to Greece in 1913, after which almost all of its population left. The new settlement later merged with the nearby villages of Palia Filippiada and Eleftherochori.
Population and economy
The town grew from 3,333 residents in 1981 to 5,207 in 2021. The main local activities are related to agriculture.
