Arta was the capital of the Despotate of Epirus, and the first thing a visitor notices is how many Byzantine monuments there are. This route is this guide's suggestion, based on the facts of its pages, and not an official itinerary.
Morning: in town
Start at the Parigoritissa, the most important Byzantine monument of Arta. Continue to Agia Theodora, which travel.gr calls the city's most important church and which holds the saint's tomb. From there it is a short drive to Kato Panagia, at the foot of Peranthi.
Midday: Vlacherna
Cross the river to Vlacherna, the church where the Komnenodoukai were buried, with frescoes of the 13th century. Combine it with a lunch stop in town.
Afternoon: river and castle
End with the castle and the bridge. If you have a second day, head to the mountains: the Rovelista Monastery and the Plaka Monastery are farther away.
