The Tzoumerka are a mountain of fir forests, rivers and stone villages on the border of the Arta and Ioannina regions. The Arachthos comes down from the mountain and ends at Lake Pournari, and the drive alongside the water is one of the best in the area. The same river later passes beneath the Bridge of Arta and flows into the Ambracian Gulf.

During the Axis occupation (1941–1944) the main base of the EDES resistance organisation was in the Tzoumerka area.

How to enjoy it

The mountain suits hiking, rest and summer coolness. A good village to use as a base is Vourgareli. Take the road trip with stops at viewpoints and do not rush it.

Planning your visit

  • Watch the weather and the roads, especially in winter.
  • Bring a warm layer even in summer.
