Zagori is a region, municipality and UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Pindus of Epirus, with its seat in Asprangeloi. It covers about 990 km² and has 46 villages, the Zagorochoria. The population in 2021 was 3,374.
Stone and bridges
More than 160 arched stone bridges were built in the wider area, mostly in the 18th and 19th centuries. The villages are built around a central square with a large church, a plane tree and a fountain. Houses are built of local stone, with stone-tile roofs held in place by their own weight, without cement. Roads came only in the 1950s.
UNESCO
The Zagori Cultural Landscape was designated a World Heritage Site in 2023, at the 45th session of UNESCO. The Vikos Gorge also lies in Zagori.
