The Municipality of Arta was created in 2011 under the Kallikratis programme by merging five municipalities of the Kapodistrias programme: Amvrakikos, Artaion, Vlacherna, Xirovouni and Filothei. It covers 457.2 square kilometres.
Population
In the 2021 census the municipality had 41,600 residents. The town of Arta itself had 21,596 in 2011, while the municipal unit of Artaion had 26,961. The other units were Filothei with 5,508, Amvrakikos with 4,344, Xirovouni with 3,257 and Vlacherna with 2,915 residents.
Good to know
The municipality does not cover the whole regional unit. The Tzoumerka, Peta and Plaka belong to other municipalities of the Arta regional unit, and Filippiada today belongs to Preveza. The mayor since 2024 is Christoforos Siafakas.
