Skoulikaria is a mountain village of the Municipality of Georgios Karaiskakis, about 44 km from Arta. The altitude in the text of the Greek Wikipedia is 973 m and in the infobox 834 m.
History
The earliest reference is in the Venetian archives, which record that in 1697 the village paid tribute for protection from pirates. Later it was an estate of Ali Pasha. In 1845 it had 140 Christian families and in 1884 Serafeim Xenopoulos counted about 100 families in three neighbourhoods. Many sources consider it the birthplace of Georgios Karaiskakis (born 1782 according to Paparrigopoulos), and his mother came from here. The commander Gogos Bakolas was also born here.
Monastery and festivals
The Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos was built, according to Xenopoulos, in the 13th century. The Karaiskakeia are held on the last weekend of July, and in June a sheep festival (Giorti Provatinas) takes place on the Gavrogos plateau.
