According to the English Wikipedia, Georgios Karaiskakis was born in 1782 in Mavrommati, Karditsa, although historians disagree and Skoulikaria in Arta is the main alternative. His mother, Zoe Dimiski, came from Skoulikaria. He became a klepht and at 15 was captured by Ali Pasha and imprisoned in Ioannina.
The Revolution
In July 1821 he fought at the Battle of Kompoti against Pliasa Ismail Pasha and then left to seize the Agrafa armatolik. In 1823 he helped lift the second siege of Missolonghi and in 1826 he became commander-in-chief in Rumeli. His greatest victory was at Arachova in 1826. He was killed at the Battle of Phaleron on 23 April 1827, on his name day, and was buried at Salamis. A municipality named after him (1997) includes Skoulikaria.
